Ukraine has been facing relentless attacks from Russia since the war began, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The latest incident occurred on August 21, when Russia launched a daytime drone attack on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, killing at least 14 people and injuring 121 others, including 22 children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to social media to express his outrage and condolences to the families of the victims. He stated that the attack was a ‘cynical and vile strike’ carried out by the Russians against an ordinary shopping center in Kryvyi Rih.
Zelensky also revealed that the drones came in two waves, with the second strike occurring about 30 minutes after the first, when rescue services were responding to the scene. The second strike was carried out by a jet-powered Shahed-type drone, which was flying at extremely low altitudes.
According to Oleksandr Vilkul, head of Kryvyi Rih’s Defense Council, 121 people were injured in the attack, 29 of whom were in serious condition, including five children. There are also reports of people who have gone missing and cannot be contacted.
Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets stated that Russia is deliberately striking places where civilians gather. He said, ‘People came to the shopping center for their ordinary business: to shop, to work, or to spend time with loved ones. For Russia, this makes no difference.’
The attack on the shopping center in Kryvyi Rih is not an isolated incident. Russia has attacked several shopping centers in Ukraine, including one in Kramatorsk, which killed two people.
Kryvyi Rih has suffered several Russian attacks since the war began, with the most recent incident occurring in April 2025, when a Russian ballistic missile struck an area near apartment buildings and a children’s playground, killing 19 people, including nine children, and injuring 75 others.
The international community must take notice of Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine and take action to stop the violence. The world cannot remain silent in the face of such atrocities.
