During a recent appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees Studio, Survivor executive producer Matt Van Wagenen, casting director Jesse Tannenbaum, editor Brian Barefoot, and returning cast member Tiffany Nicole Ervin discussed the CBS reality series’ ‘incredible’ Season 50. The panelists reflected on the season’s unique approach, which aimed to create a ‘celebration’ for the castaways.
‘Well, I think for us, Season 50, when Jeff [Probst] first talked about it, it was about being a celebration. And every time we talked about this, we thought, how can this be a celebration? And for us, celebration meant throwing everything at the players that we could, which I think we did,’ said Van Wagenen.
Van Wagenen emphasized that the team aimed to create an exciting experience for the players by introducing numerous challenges and obstacles. He noted that the castaways rose to the occasion, embracing the unexpected twists and turns. The executive producer praised the season’s castaways, stating that they ‘bought in with everything that we were doing, which made it for me an amazing season to watch and be a part of for sure.’
Season 50 marked a significant milestone for the series, serving as a ‘leaping-off point’ for the upcoming Season 51. Van Wagenen revealed that the new season will feature ‘permanent uncertainty,’ with even more curveballs and question marks for the castaways. The executive producer expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating that the team has ‘amped it up’ for Season 51.
Casting director Jesse Tannenbaum discussed the challenges of casting for Survivor, emphasizing the importance of finding ‘compelling people’ to participate in the show. He noted that the casting process can be unpredictable, as some individuals may present themselves differently during the casting process versus on the show itself.
Returning cast member Tiffany Nicole Ervin shared her excitement about participating in Season 50, praising the season’s unique approach and the opportunities it presented for her. She expressed her gratitude for being part of such an incredible experience, stating that it was ‘palpable how excited and how grateful everybody was to just be a part of such an experience.’
Editor Brian Barefoot discussed the process of editing the show, highlighting the importance of capturing the ‘little moments’ and ‘little things’ that can make a significant impact on the viewing experience. He praised the show’s host, Jeff Probst, for his infectious enthusiasm and dedication to the series.
The Survivor team received widespread recognition for Season 50, earning five Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality Program (Probst).
