US Citizen Wrongfully Detained in China, Secretary of State Marco Rubio Announces
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that American citizen Min Zin is being wrongfully detained in China. The development comes after Min Zin was arrested on June 3, while attending an academic conference in Yunnan, China. He was invited to the conference by the Chinese government.
According to a statement released by the US State Department, Min Zin was detained on suspicion of engaging in espionage and endangering China’s national security. However, his brother, Aung Maw Zin, has disputed these allegations, stating that they are ‘far from the truth.’
Min Zin is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy – Myanmar. He is also a Ph.D. candidate at the Travers Department of Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley. Despite not finishing high school, Min Zin was accepted into the Berkeley Ph.D. program.
ISP-Myanmar has called for Min Zin’s immediate and unconditional release, stating that academic and research organizations should be able to conduct research freely and without fear of intimidation. The US State Department has also announced that it will continue to advocate for Min Zin’s release, as well as the release of all US citizens who are arbitrarily detained or exit-banned in China.
Min Zin’s case is not an isolated incident. He is the second American academic to be named as wrongfully detained in recent months. Dr. Youlin Chen, another American academic, was also designated as a wrongful detainee by the US State Department. Chen’s wife, Dr. Yufang Rong, has expressed gratitude for the designation, stating that it meant a great deal to her husband and their family.
Min Zin’s detention has sparked concerns about the safety and security of US citizens in China. His brother, Aung Maw Zin, has stated that Min Zin was not involved in any activities that could have put him at risk. Min Zin fled Burma, the country that became Myanmar, in 1988 due to his leadership in student protests. He was forced into hiding for seven years in Thailand before moving to the US, where he became a citizen in 2012.
Min Zin’s detention has also highlighted the complex relationship between China and the US. China has accused the US of interfering in its internal affairs, while the US has accused China of human rights abuses. The detention of Min Zin is a reminder of the challenges that US citizens face when traveling to China.
The US State Department has urged the Chinese government to release Min Zin and other US citizens who are arbitrarily detained or exit-banned in China. The US government has also called on China to respect the rights and freedoms of US citizens, including their right to conduct research and engage in academic activities without fear of intimidation.
The case of Min Zin is a complex and sensitive issue that highlights the challenges of navigating the complex relationship between China and the US. The US State Department’s announcement of Min Zin’s wrongful detention is a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights and freedoms of US citizens abroad.
