Most people have experienced it: You think about someone you have not seen in years, and they call that afternoon. A stranger says exactly what you needed to hear during a difficult week. A chance encounter changes the direction of your career or relationship. The timing feels so improbable that it is difficult to dismiss as simple chance.

Carl Jung called these experiences synchronicities, meaningful coincidences that seem connected without an obvious causal explanation. Some people feel deeply spiritual. Others explain them as selective attention or confirmation bias. But perhaps there is another way to think about them.
One of the most striking features of synchronicity is that it rarely appears randomly across the lifespan. Meaningful coincidences often seem to cluster during periods of grief, illness, career change, divorce, retirement, becoming a parent, or other moments that reshape identity. Why might this happen?
Several explanations have been proposed, ranging from changes in attention and pattern recognition to deeper processes of biological and psychological reorganization. Psychologists have long known that uncertainty changes perception. During unstable periods, people become more attentive to patterns, relationships, symbols, and unexpected connections that they might otherwise ignore.
This heightened sensitivity undoubtedly explains part of the phenomenon. Yet there may be more occurring than changes in attention alone. Recent research by colleagues and us has explored whether major psychological transitions themselves may follow preferred developmental timing patterns.
Large epidemiological datasets suggest that the onset ages of several major mental disorders cluster around Fibonacci-derived harmonic intervals more often than expected by chance. During stable periods, biological, psychological, and social systems settle into established patterns.
As instability and transformation increase, genetic, psychological, and environmental influences interact more strongly, making the system increasingly sensitive to small perturbations. This heightened sensitivity may create windows during which major psychological disorders are more likely to emerge.
At the same time, increased openness and cognitive flexibility may enhance the perception and integration of meaningful coincidences. In this sense, psychopathology and synchronicity may represent different expressions of the same underlying process of reorganization.
According to this perspective, Fibonacci timing does not cause either mental illness or synchronicity. Rather, it may mark periods in which recursive developmental processes naturally concentrate transitions, increasing the probability of both adaptive and maladaptive outcomes.
An important qualification is that this relationship may not be linear. It may instead resemble an inverted U-shaped curve. Moderate levels of instability may maximize the ability to detect and integrate coherent patterns.
As old assumptions loosen and new possibilities emerge, meaningful coincidences may be more likely to be recognized. At the opposite extreme, however, excessive distress or cognitive disorganization may narrow attention and impair integration, reducing the ability to recognize broader patterns.
In this sense, the same periods of heightened plasticity that increase vulnerability to psychopathology may also increase the probability of experiencing synchronicity, but only up to a point.
Complex systems researchers often observe similar behavior near periods of transition. Small changes can produce unexpectedly large effects because the entire system has become more sensitive.
Fractal systems provide a useful framework because similar patterns can emerge simultaneously across different scales. Thoughts, emotions, relationships, habits, and social environments may all undergo parallel forms of change during transition, temporarily increasing the probability that previously independent events converge into meaningful alignments.
In this sense, synchronicity may be less about isolated events and more about temporary episodes of multiscale coherence. The coincidence itself may simply be the visible expression of a deeper process of reorganization.
A middle ground between mystical certainty and skeptical dismissal is offered by this perspective. Meaningful coincidences need not be messages sent by the universe. Nor must they be reduced to cognitive mistakes.
They may instead reflect the remarkable capacity of complex human systems to generate coherence during periods of transformation. Research into meaningful coincidences remains in its early stages.
Although many questions remain unanswered, one observation appears consistent: Life transitions often coincide with periods of heightened meaning and unexpected connections.
