The new Framework Laptop 12 model boasts Intel’s latest Core Series 3 chips, which have been used in the Framework Laptop 13 Pro to enhance efficiency. Framework claims that these entry-level Core Series 3 chips bring similar benefits to the Framework Laptop 12, including improved performance and power efficiency. The laptop is available in various configurations, each featuring a different Core Series 3 chip model: Core 3, Core 5, or Core 7.

The Framework Laptop 12 can be equipped with up to 48GB of RAM, but the base model starts at 8GB, which is a compromise due to the current RAM shortages in the industry. However, Framework offers a range of RAM upgrade options, including the possibility to upgrade to 16GB, 32GB, or even 48GB of RAM.

One of the most significant upgrades in the new Framework Laptop 12 is the support for Thunderbolt 4 on two of the laptop’s four hot-swappable Expansion Cards. Additionally, the laptop now features faster DDR5 RAM, which provides a noticeable boost in performance. The laptop’s display remains unchanged, with a 12.2-inch screen.

The Framework Laptop 12 also offers a range of customization options, including a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader. The pre-built Core 5 and Core 7 models, which run Linux by default, come with both upgrades. However, users can also choose to upgrade their laptop with a backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader through Framework’s DIY option.

The Framework Laptop 12 is available with Linux pre-installed, which is a popular choice among Framework’s customers. In fact, over 80% of original Laptop 12 owners are running Linux, so it’s no surprise that Framework decided to offer the new model with Fedora pre-installed. Windows 11 is available as a $100 upgrade for those who prefer the Windows operating system.

The new Framework Laptop 12 is expected to start shipping in October, and Framework is currently collecting pre-orders. The laptop is available in various colors, including green, gray, light purple, pink, and black, with prices starting at $699 for a pre-built Linux configuration in green and $549 for a DIY version in black, gray, light purple, pink, or green.
