In an exclusive interview with MinnMax, Jeff Kaplan, the mastermind behind the upcoming open-world survival game, The Legend of California, has shared his vision for this highly anticipated title. Set in the gold-rush era of California in 1849, this game promises to deliver a unique blend of survival mechanics, exploration, and multiplayer action.

The Legend of California is an open-world survival game that allows players to explore a vast, untamed landscape, complete with its own set of rules and challenges. Players can choose to trade with fellow players, fish, mine, ride horses, or even become an unofficial sheriff. The game’s world is designed to be a sandbox, where players can build and customize their own ranches, complete with their own set of features and attractions.

One of the most exciting features of The Legend of California is its private server option. According to Kaplan, players will be able to create their own private servers, where they can customize the game experience to suit their preferences. This includes the option to make the server PvE-only, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for all players.

However, for those who prefer a more chaotic experience, the game’s 100-player public servers will offer a chance to engage in player-versus-player (PvP) combat, where players can kill each other or their horses. The only exception to this rule is the destruction of buildings, which is prohibited to maintain a sense of community and cooperation among players.
Kaplan also revealed that server resets will occur every month, with the game’s world retaining its overall shape while the locations of key points of interest, known as ‘strongholds,’ will change. This will keep the game experience fresh and exciting, as players will need to adapt to new environments and challenges.
As for features that Kaplan wishes were included in The Legend of California, there are several on the table for future patches. These include holiday events, pets, and horse breeding, as well as the possibility of incorporating toys-to-life elements, similar to those found in games like Spyro and friends. However, Kaplan noted that these features may not be included at launch, citing the game’s budget constraints.
Despite the challenges, Kaplan remains optimistic about the game’s potential, stating that he believes ‘we could make this game to infinity, this is the dream game.’ The game will receive live updates, but Kaplan prefers to avoid using the term ‘live service,’ which he feels has a negative connotation.
The Legend of California is still in development, with at least two more alpha versions planned before the game’s early access release. While the exact timeline for the game’s launch remains unclear, one thing is certain: this game is shaping up to be a thrilling addition to the survival game genre.
