Instinct Brings Its AI Agent to Group Conversations

Instinct, the AI agent startup that recently reached a $10 billion valuation after its latest funding round, announced on Monday a new capability that lets users add the agent to any group chat. The feature is designed to simplify collaborative tasks such as travel planning, snagging event tickets, running fantasy leagues, organizing carpools, or coordinating who brings what to a Thanksgiving dinner.

One of the most notable aspects of the update is that the AI agent functions in the group even when the other participants have not signed up for Instinct themselves. The company emphasized that this cross‑platform compatibility removes a major barrier to adoption, allowing anyone in the conversation to benefit from the agent’s assistance without needing an account.

How the Group Chat Experience Works

Starting today, early access users can invite Instinct into their group chats. Once added, a dedicated instance of the agent joins the conversation and operates on behalf of the entire group. Users retain control over their personal Instinct agent, which must request permission before linking with the group’s instance. According to founder Noah Shinn, individuals can also designate which groups they trust and revoke that trust at any time.

Shinn explained that the group‑level Instinct is kept siloed from each user’s personal account; it cannot access private data or messages outside the chat. The personal agent will always ask the user for consent before sharing any information or executing an action on behalf of the group. If new members join the chat later, any pending responses from a user’s personal agent are held until the user approves their release.

Competitive Landscape and Recent Developments

Instinct’s move puts it ahead of rivals such as Meta’s Muse, which currently does not offer group‑chat functionality for its AI agent. Meta’s older product, Meta AI, can be added to group chats on WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook, but the newer Muse assistant lacks this feature.

Both Instinct and Muse have been racing to add voice‑call capabilities over the past few weeks, each trying to capture a larger share of the consumer AI market. In parallel, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Dots last week—personal AI agents that can operate inside ChatGPT Spaces, collaborative workspaces where humans and Dots interact together.

On X (formerly Twitter), Noah Shinn shared a short video demonstrating the new group‑chat flow and detailed the privacy safeguards. He wrote, “Making plans with friends usually turns into a frustrating back‑and‑forth over times and places. With Instinct in the group, you can explore options together, agree on a plan and get it done, all in one thread.” The feature will initially be available to early access users, with a broader rollout planned “soon.” Users who want to try it can ask their Instinct agent to place them on the waiting list.
