Josh Radnor Opens Up About His ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Co-Stars: ‘You Just Go Out and Live Your Life’
In a recent interview with the ‘Half the Picture’ podcast, Josh Radnor shared his thoughts on his time working on the hit TV show ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (HIMYM). The popular sitcom, which aired from 2005 to 2014, followed the lives of five friends living in New York City as they navigated love, careers, and life’s ups and downs.
During the podcast interview, Radnor discussed his relationships with his former co-stars, including Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, and Alyson Hannigan. When asked if he was still close to his HIMYM family, Radnor replied, ‘No. Not even a little bit.’
Not Close Anymore
However, Radnor emphasized that his response wasn’t meant to be dramatic. He explained that the cast had a very intense time together, and it was natural for their relationships to evolve over time. ‘You can’t imagine not seeing each other every day because you’ve seen each other every day for so long,’ Radnor said. ‘And then it just disperses, and you just go out and live your life.’
Radnor also mentioned that he and Jason Segel ‘send each other texts every once in a while,’ but they haven’t seen each other in ‘a really long time.’ As for Cobie Smulders, Radnor has ‘seen her mostly on Zoom.’ The last time he saw Alyson Hannigan was at his wedding in 2024.
Radnor also reflected on the cast’s dynamics, saying, ‘It’s like family where you don’t get to choose your family. We were cast. We didn’t choose each other.’ He added that family dynamics come out to play when you’re in an environment like that for so long. ‘But you also have love that is quite deep and rich and probably everlasting, but it’s not an active love. Acting is like love affairs that you have, and then you move on.’
In the interview, Radnor also talked about his ‘HIMYM’ rewatch podcast, which he hosts with series co-creator Craig Thomas. Neil Patrick Harris appeared on an episode earlier in 2026.
Love and Appreciation
Despite not being close to his former co-stars, Radnor expressed his love and appreciation for them. ‘I have love for all these people,’ he said. ‘It’s like college where you have this very intense time together, and you think you’re going to be — you can’t imagine not seeing each other every day because you’ve seen each other every day for so long.’
Radnor’s comments offer a unique glimpse into the lives of the HIMYM cast members, who have all gone on to pursue various projects in the entertainment industry. The show remains a beloved classic, and its impact on popular culture continues to be felt.
